What Kind of Car Trouble?

Poor BabyMonday morning, car accident. Lucky day for me! “No, no, he didn’t slam you, he didn’t bump you, he didn’t nudge you… he *rubbed* you. And rubbin, son, is racin’.” I’ll set the record straight- it wasn’t my fault, no one was hurt and there is very little damage to my car. I was driving to work this morning, rocking some metal and hoping I would make it to my desk on time. I might have, but as I sat there at a red light, this woman decides to smack her front left fender up against my right rear quarter panel. It was 2 lanes in one direction, and she was either trying to pass me on the right- which people love to do on this street- or she was telling the truth about ‘parking’ and just cut the wheel out too much without looking before hitting the gas. Well, that’s what she told the cops, which put her at fault. My insurance company agreed when I reported it- There’s about 4 or 5 deep scratches in my paint above the tire- at least a couple right down to the white. Lovely. At least that was the extent of it.

She gave me a bit of nonsense about not involving the police or insurance companies… and although I explained to her multiple times we could settle it privately without me claiming agaisnt her if she wanted to do so- but that I simply preferred to protect myself with a police report, she went on about being a ‘born again’ christian, and that people don’t treat each other in such a manner. I’m honestly not a bad person, and she was a poor little 67 year old woman- but I don’t take chances of just driving away- only to find out she claimed a different story after I left. Sometimes life just takes away your trust of strangers. I don’t think there’s more the $500 in body work here, but it’s really not the point. The car is barely a year old, I was stopped at a red light- and I wonder just how good of a christian she would have been if the tables were turned. A nice start to the day. I made it through the rest- secret anthem today on the ipod: Marching Band - Feel Good About It (mp3).

  1. Born again christians piss me off. I experienced something similar 3 years ago, when a woman sideswiped me. When I went to (legally) whoop her ass, she was going on and on about how she’s a pastor’s wife, and that they didn’t have any money, and live as the lord intends. Fine, but honestly, God’s good intentions weren’t gonna fix my car, so I took her insurance info, and she paid me.

  2. seriously. i mean, what are we supposed to do- when people ask “hey, where did you get that huge scratch?!?” we should just say… “ooooh, it’s ok. someone hit me, and it was their fault- but they were a really good person so i just let them go.” i don’t make car payments so people can just run into me and say oops. in all fairness, this lady kept offering money- but like i said, i’m not taking chances. i drive away without a police report, God only knows what they will say happened to their insurance company.

  3. update- this woman almost worked out a deal with me, but then just got all stupid. i was patient and fair (or so i thought)- but it was not to be. now i gots to hike over to the newark police station and get the report, file the claim, and deal with all this crap. worse for her- her insurance will most certainly get hit now. what an idiot.

  4. the final update- to her credit, although she didn’t save herself money by settling privately, she did report the incident to her insurance company honestly. they subsequentyl called me and took 100% liability. i faxed them my estimate, and they actually agreed to it over the phone and issued the check, which i received saturday– so it all worked out fairly well in the end.
