RSS in Plain English

I came across an awesome video and article while scrolling through my never ending digg feed late last week entitled RSS in Plain English, over at CommonCraft.com. The author was dead on, knowing the pain of using, publishing and promoting the RSS technology; yet all the while knowing he had been preaching to the converted.

We made this video for our friends (and yours) that haven’t yet felt the power of our friend the RSS reader. We want to convert people…

He read my mind- I’ve been trying to convert all the mikull.com readers for I don’t know how long now- remember such mikull.com hits as What is RSS?, 2007 Will Be A Big Year For RSS, and Google Reader? Right. I didn’t think you did.

So here, perhaps, is my one my final attempts to convert you non-believers by helping you to understand and see the power of RSS. This is one of the cornerstones of the future of the web. RSS stands for Rich Site Summary, or more commonly, Really Simple Syndication. An RSS feed is something a website (or a blog) offers to readers provide a “news feed” of their information, as the embedded video will learn ya.

There are two types of Internet users, those that use RSS and those that don’t. This video is for the people who could save time using RSS, but don’t know where to start.

It is my belief that RSS has empowered everyone to get the richest experience from the web possible. Information sharing, whether it be through pictures on Flickr or popular news stories on digg has never been so relevant, abundant, and available. Watch the video, discover a way to enjoy feeds from your favorite site (like mikull.com), and start connecting to your world more efficiently my friends!

  1. Michael!

Right on! I went through an hour and a half presentation last week with our Sales/Marketing team regarding the values of RSS. In a room of 10 people (not including myself) only one person admitted _using_ an RSS feed and that was our marketing intern-turn-hire who was just out of college. Amazing. How are these people supposed to sell the features of “Out of the box” RSS when they don’t know what it is.

Thanks for continuing to spread the word my friend.

  3. It still baffles me that people avoid technology that will save them time and help them gather knowledge…

People involved with web development who haven’t explored XML/RSS just make me scratch my head. I guess it’s the funny looking code and acronyms that freak people out. /shrug.
