New on DVD: January 2006

Corpse BrideOne more enhancement: Last year we started listing upcoming dvd’s monthly on the message board- a big hit with reader- so the listings became weekly. We then moved the weekly listings to the main pages and added featured amazon links and cover galleries. This year we streamline it one step further and return to the monthly feature, and add more complete linked listings to the cover galleries. I hope you all enjoy this format the best- and for god sakes, click that more link or you missing everything!
This month on retail shelves we have are standard fair of what you would normally expect- overall I’m not terribly excited about anything in particular. TV shows have flooded the release calendar right from the get go- among them I did smile to see Alien Nation and the old Flash show. (I remember thinking flash was cool– yet somehow I doubt seeing this one in my collection) I suspect Flash sales may dictate how DC approached a new feature length for the character, so if that’s your type of party you might want to pick it up. There’s a lot more TV here, so get your Magnum PI, Hunter, Knight Rider fixes while you’re in Dallas.

The double dips are here and ready to go. Here’s your second chance to think about these flciks: Dumb and Dumber, Snatch, Dead Poet’s Society, Bueller’s Day Off & a spiffy new extended edition of Dune. There’s a couple more, browse on down for more.

Don’t forget a few classics: Benji? I mean who doesn’t love Benji?? A whole bunch of Pink Panther- which I’m sure is floating in to regenerate interest before the new Steve Martin flick hits theaters.

So what’s new and interesting? Broken Flowers with Bill Murray could be interesting, although I will surely wait for it to popo on Starz. Wedding Crashers, from what people tell me, is funny as shit- might be cable for me, but we will see. Transporter 2- I like these sort of movies- cars all over the place and crazy figthing. Rock! Red Eye will be a great Showtime night, just like Flightplan. You can’t go wrong with Tim Burton though, so Corpse Bride is getting my monthly pick- with Lord of War being my second place for general interest.

I always neglect mention quite a bit, but with our new expanded format you shouldn’t miss anything- just scroll down and get all you the info you need.

  1. i didn’t hear too many good things about Corpse Bride, and thats coming from people who love Burton’s films, but it’s on my netflix queue so maybe i can prove them wrong. But i have heard bad things from many people

  2. it’s difficult to defend a movie i haven’t seen yet, but i do have issue with what you say- first, fuck critics and what people think. i read the reviews just like you, but i know i don’t always agree with them. i noticed lately that many of the readers here have been a bit more negative, and rather impressionable as they go into films.

you have to find your own levels of expectations when you watch a movie. if you watch it with negative reviews in your mind, there’s a greater chance you’re not going to enjoy it. at the same time, if you watch a movie with raised level of expectations, you increase the odds you won’t like it.

when it comes to corpse bride, i noticed many of the people who were cynical about it were either sour about the whole ‘kiddie goth’ tim burton following that helped build hype for this, or were completly convinved they were supposed to be watching a sequel to the nightmare before christmas.

i’m going to blind buy this one knowing nothing except the trailer entertained me, the theme intrigues me, and the director has a style i typically enjoy- which is more than i can say for nearly all the releases hitting shelves this month. if i listen to critics and hold too high a standard for every movie i watch, i wouldn’t enjoy anything.

  3. I did see this in the theaters and love Tim Burton Films. My fav is Nightmare Before Christmas. Don’t have high expectations before seeing it.

  4. well, that sounds like a polite way of saying you didn’t like it.. heh. i believe i remember you and your significant other mentioning you weren’t as entertained as you thought you would be… disappointing to hear. i have all the burton films, and i too have had mixed reactions to his storytelling. i’ll still pick it up, and perhaps by expecting it to be lacking i will enjoy it more.

this was how i felt about king kong- i saw reviews ranging from ’suckfest’ to ‘awesome’- so i just waited until late one night, dumbed down my expectations and enjoyed the ride. turned out, as i mentioned on the message board, i did have a fun seeing it– perhaps another factor in judgement is where and how you see the movie in question.

  5. Well, i watched “Corpse Bride” last night. It was just…..ok. I wasn’t really impressed with the songs and the story was nothing new. I have seen that “the parents want their daughter to wed someone rich” scenario before. I guess adding a living dead girl to the mix made it somewhat different. Personally, “Nightmare Before Christmas” is way superior than this.
And damn was “Corpse Bride” short!…..oh I meant TIM BURTON’S “Corpse Bride”. They could have just called it “Corpse Bride” there was no need for the Tim Burton in front of it in the main titles.
