Happy Birthday Star Wars

Star WarsOn May 25, 1977, the original “Star Wars” - one of the highest-grossing movies of all time - changed the world. In theaters across America, audiences sat spellbound. Somewhere between the words “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away …” and the final scene, in which our triumphant heroes turn to face a cheering audience both on and off the screen, George Lucas shaped an entire generation.

“Star Wars” raked in $6.8 million during its first weekend of wide release. Within months it would do something no movie—including “Jaws,” released the year before—had ever done: It surpassed the $300-million revenue mark. “Star Wars” topped out at $798 million in worldwide revenue. Earnings at 20th Century Fox more than doubled their best-ever mark in 1977, as did the company’s stock price. The entire film industry was completely changed.

Of course, “Star Wars” spawned two more gigantic chapters and a massive prequel trilogy — and from its box office receipts and revolution of the film merchandising industry, namely action figures, it became a multibillion-dollar franchise. It also made unknown actors cultural icons and box office giants, and more than anything, it captured the imaginations of millions of people worldwide.

Some of us never outgrew Lucas’ space opera and its ability to set our imaginations running wild, myself included. Here’s to all of us, and 30 years of Star Wars. May the force be with you!
