Can Wii Play?

Nintendo Wii, Case FreshApparently, you may not. Not just yet, anyhow. This thing is in ridiculously short supply across the country. I’ve made mention and even questioned the Nintendo Wii. Big bottom line, my wife and I did enjoy playing with it together when a friend lent us the system for weekend, which is saying something. And so, this weekend I went out Wii hunting.

Friday night I surfed all the sites, gathering what knowledge I could. Saturday morning I blasted off the Island to Manhattan. Despite well noted shortages, surely the Nintendo store in Rockefeller center would have them in stock? Sold out within minutes of opening. I checked around the city, and in a few stores where I knew people in Jersey. Same story everywhere: shipments are scattered, people are lining up in the early morning hours, employees are terminated for ’setting units aside’. Great.

Sunday morning I woke up later than I meant to- and missed Target’s opening doors and lines, so I sped over to Toys ‘R Us and Best Buy, which are next door to each other on the Island. Here too, people were lined up. Toys ‘R Us had received 100 systems the night before, and roughly 50 people had been forming up since 4 A.M. Yes, I got lucky. The store was allowing people waiting for the Wii to form the line inside due to the cold, and by the time I got my ticket and got on line, the store was about to open. 10 minutes in, all the units had been accounted for. Wii Play was another item in short supply, as Toys ‘R Us had none- but again I lucked out and nabbed one from the recently received short supply at Best Buy.

This week I’ll follow up a bit with some articles, comments and what have you. Nintendo DS: meet eBay.

  3. More importantly, how are the games? Which ones are you playing, and does your wife like it?

  4. well, remember Ron- it was my wife who prompted me to purchase the system when we borrowed it from someone else.

we haven’t had time to play it yet, but i’ll comment when we do.

  5. since you haven’t had time to play it, maybe you should let me borrow it. maybe your little wii can convince my wife to get one.

i’m still pulling for the PSP though, considering CAK doesn’t play games at all.

  6. the wii will make her want to play. it’s different from other systems- the most cross-gender, cross generation system i’ve probably ever seen.

and no, you can’t borrow yet. we need to at least play it ourselves first. ;)
