Audience-Free Blogging
Audience-free Blogging - Oly brings up a wonderful topic: is it safe to blog about your work? is it legal to be fired from your job is you blog about it in some shape or form the company doesn’t care for? what if you didn’t name names? it’s a troubling development, when you see people losing their jobs for something they mentioned on their personal blog. one could argue talking about your day in negative fashion in your personal time with a group of people is also grounds for termination! well, perhaps not.
in oly’s example, it seems clear that blogger in question did not deserved to be terminated soley for saying someone they worked with was ‘mean’, without saying who it was or where she worked. then there’s more complicated stories, such as the diary of a (fired) flight attendant. in fact, employees reportedly have been fired for blogging at a number of companies, including Starbucks, Delta Air Lines, Wells Fargo, Friendster and Kmart. i believe in freedom of speech and all, but then again i can somewhat understand where companies are coming from when it comes to stuff like this. a grey area, indeed- with no easy answers or laws on the books to direct us just yet.

A few days ago I received a suppliment to our employee handbook regarding the Bank’s policy on personal blogging, what is and is not acceptable. Apparently as an employee of a large company we must always uphold our professionalism and always represent our business culture. (Wind me up!)
